Middle School English Language Arts

At The School of Saint Elizabeth, our Middle School English Language Arts program is a dynamic, student-centered experience rooted in the New Jersey Student Learning Standards (NJSLS-ELA) and designed to cultivate confident, thoughtful, and articulate communicators. A Rigorous and Purposeful Literacy Experience

Students in grades 6–8 engage in a comprehensive literacy block that emphasizes reading, writing, speaking, and listening as interconnected skills. Through sustained, focused instruction, students encounter rich and complex texts that challenge them to think deeply, analyze critically, and make meaningful connections across disciplines and real-world contexts.

Our students are not only readers—they are thinkers. They explore literature and informational texts that broaden perspectives, strengthen vocabulary, and build the analytical skills necessary for success in high school and beyond.

Authentic Writing and Expression
Writing is a cornerstone of our program. Students regularly engage in authentic writing experiences, including narrative, argumentative, and informational pieces. Mathematics

Our mathematics program builds strong problem-solving skills, mathematical reasoning, and conceptual understanding. Students explore topics including ratios, proportions, expressions, equations, geometry, statistics, and pre-algebra concepts in preparation for high school mathematics. Instruction emphasizes both conceptual understanding and procedural fluency through real-world applications, collaborative learning, and differentiated instruction.

Science – STREAM Certified

Our STREAM-certified Science program integrates Science, Technology, Religion, Engineering, the Arts, and Mathematics into hands-on, inquiry-based learning. Students engage in labs, investigations, engineering challenges, and problem-solving activities that build curiosity and scientific thinking. Middle school science emphasizes experimentation, data analysis, and real-world application of scientific concepts.

Social Studies

Our Social Studies program prepares students to be informed, responsible global citizens. Religion – Catholic Formation

Faith formation is central to the middle school experience at The School of Saint Elizabeth. Students deepen their understanding of Scripture, Catholic doctrine, Church history, and moral decision-making.

Spanish

Our Spanish program develops communication skills, cultural understanding, and global awareness.

Middle school learners focus on real-world communication skills and explore the cultures and traditions of Spanish-speaking countries.

Art

Our Art program fosters creativity, expression, and the development of technical skills. Music

Our Music program builds musical literacy, creativity, and performance skills. Students study rhythm, melody, harmony, and music theory through performance, listening, and instrumental experiences.

In addition to weekly music classes, St. E’s offers a number of choral opportunities. Chorus ensembles, in addition to our Hand Bell Choir and Liturgical Choir, perform in Christmas and Spring Concerts, during select Masses and at special events/exhibitions.

Physical Education

Media & Technology

Our Media and Technology program includes instruction in digital literacy, media exploration, and the responsible use of emerging technologies, including Artificial Intelligence (AI). Aligned with the New Jersey Student Learning Standards (NJSLS), students learn to navigate digital tools safely, ethically, and effectively in an evolving technological world. Students explore how media and information are created, shared, and evaluated, with a strong emphasis on critical thinking and responsible digital citizenship. Instruction includes guidance on the appropriate use of AI tools to support learning, research, creativity, and problem-solving while maintaining academic integrity. Students are taught to understand both the benefits and limitations of technology, including AI, and to use these tools in ways that are respectful, responsible, and aligned with school expectations.

8th Grade Capstone Project

8th Grade Capstone Project: Stanford Design Thinking in Action
Our 8th Grade Capstone Project is an eight-month, interdisciplinary research experience rooted in Stanford University’s Design Thinking model. This signature experience challenges students to think critically, innovate creatively, and apply their learning to real-world problem-solving. Students begin by identifying authentic, real-world problems and then move through the Stanford Design Thinking process: Empathize, Define, Ideate, Prototype, and Test. Throughout the journey, students conduct in-depth research, analyze data, and gain perspective through interviews with experts in their chosen field. As they develop solutions, students design and refine prototypes that address real needs in meaningful and innovative ways. The project concludes with a formal presentation where students share their research process, solution, and prototype with an authentic audience. This capstone experience integrates all areas of learning while preparing students with essential skills for high school, college, and beyond.
