A JOYOUS CELEBRATION OF SISTER MARTHA'S 90TH BIRTHDAY

by Heather Angelastro

Sister Martha celebrated a special milestone last weekend when she turned 90! On Friday and Saturday, Sister Martha celebrated with close family and friends. On Sunday, the School of Saint Elizabeth surprised her with another celebration to honor her. The school presented her with a beautiful cake and a personalized piece of art created by our talented new Art teacher, Mrs. Lederman, and the students.

H.S.A. President, Lisa Viera took the microphone to kick off the celebration, “Sister Martha has been such a blessing to all of our students and our school community for many years. We love to see her out at the car line in the mornings, and she blesses us every month at our spirituality meetings. She walks around the school to see all of the children. She is truly a blessing to the community.”

Sister Martha wasn’t prepared for the surprise, but she spoke from the heart to a crowded room including Principal Donley, Father Jay Siceloff, and many members of the faculty, staff, student body, and families.

“I feel that all of the families and all of the staff and administration have been a very big blessing to me. I know being 90 is a gift and I am trying to use it the best I can,” she said with a laugh. “I am glad I have the opportunity to spend time with all of you.  Thank you very much for everything. I am very, very grateful. God has blessed me with all of you,” Sister Martha said.

The celebration was filled with great food, laughter, and photos of the guest of honor smiling with staff, faculty, students, and school families alike. It also provided an opportunity to Principal Donley and Father Jay Siceloff to reflect on her important role at the school.

"Sr. Martha is such a positive presence in our school. Even in retirement she is committed to being involved and provides a wonderful witness to the entire community," Father Jay noted.

On a similar note, Principal Donley shared, "Sr. Martha has been a true inspiration and blessing to our St. Elizabeth community. Her presence, faith, wisdom, and unwavering dedication have touched the lives of generations of students, families, faculty, and staff. As a Sister, principal, spiritual leader, and beloved member of our community, she has always led with compassion, grace, and a deep love for St. Elizabeth. Even in retirement, her life of faith and service is a beautiful example to each of us, and we are profoundly grateful for the many ways she has helped shape the St. Elizabeth community."
